Music by Benny Andersson

Lyrics by Tim Rice

Synopsis

Set during the Cold War, 'Chess' tells the story of a politically charged chess tournament between an American and a Soviet grandmaster. The competition becomes a metaphor for the larger ideological battle between the two superpowers. At the heart of the story is a complex love triangle involving the American's second, Florence, who falls in love with the Soviet player. As the tournament progresses, personal and political tensions rise, leading to betrayal, heartbreak, and sacrifice. The musical explores themes of love, loyalty, and the human cost of political conflict, set against the backdrop of a high-stakes chess championship.
